Compassion Can Save Queer Lives

Illustrator Alex Ottenwaleter (Berlijn) maakt een muurschildering die de kracht, vreugde en verbondenheid binnen de queer community zichtbaar maakt. De vormen en kleuren zijn speels en levendig, maar het onderliggende thema, bescherming, solidariteit en overleving, is allesbehalve oppervlakkig.

Zichtbaarheid in de publieke ruimte is voor queer en trans personen geen luxe, maar noodzaak. Daarom nodigt Alex’ mural uit tot kijken, meedoen en dialoog.

Het ontwerp is opgebouwd uit kleinere delen, zodat meerdere mensen tegelijk kunnen bijdragen. Tijdens een workshop of open schildermoment leer je hoe zo’n collaboratief project tot stand komt: hoe je een ontwerp overzet op groot formaat, welke materialen je nodig hebt, en hoe je het werk organiseert in groep.

Samen maken we een beeld dat kleur geeft aan de community, en ruimte opeist in het straatbeeld. Een uitnodiging om zichtbaar te zijn — en dat samen te vieren.

Illustrator Alex Ottenwaelter (Berlin) creates a mural that reveals the strength, joy and connection within the queer community. The shapes and colours are playful and vibrant, but the underlying theme of protection, solidarity and survival is anything but superficial.

Visibility in public spaces is not a luxury for queer and trans people, but a necessity. Therefore, Alex's mural invites people to look, participate and converse.

The design is made up of smaller parts so that several people can contribute at the same time. During a workshop or open painting moment, you will learn how such a collaborative project comes about: how to transfer a design to large format, what materials you need, and how to organise the work as a  group.

Together, we create an image that gives colour to the community, and claims space in the streetscape. An invitation to be visible - and to celebrate it together.
