Fleur Pierets

Fleur Pierets is a Belgian award-winning performance artist, writer, speaker, and human-rights advocate whose work balances between photography and theory, performance and non-fiction. During the presentation of the Çavaria Achievement Award, writer Jeroen Olyslaegers called her a “revolutionary of consciousness.” And that is exactly what Fleur addresses in her work: the importance of examining which boundaries are truly our own and which are social constructs. About positive activism, and the necessity of looking more often at what binds us than at what divides us.

She worked for seven years with her wife Julian P. Boom as an artist duo, and together they published the queer online magazine Et Alors? Magazine, which reached 750,000 readers per issue worldwide. Their best-known work was 22-The Project, an art performance in which the couple planned to marry in every country where same-sex marriage was legal. Julian died after their fourth “I do.”

The book Julian, about their work and the loss of her wife, was published in September 2019 by Das Mag. It has since been translated into English, French, and Swedish, and the film Julian (directed by Cato Kusters) is now showing in cinemas.

She also wrote the novels Heerlijk Monster (2022) and Beton (2024 — part of the color series by Uitgeverij Oevers). Fleur’s two-part children’s book Love Around the World and Love is Love, in which she fulfills the dream of their 22-The Project, was published in the U.S. in 2020 and beautifully illustrated by Fatinha Ramos. Her most recent children’s book is Alle dagen Sneeuw, which explores gender equality in sports.

Fleur runs a heritage/inclusion project called They Were Here. Everywhere she is invited to give a lecture, she writes a story about a forgotten woman writer/artist/... from that city. The stories she has written so far can be found on Spotify. She reads them in libraries, cultural centers, schools, … alongside a talk about the importance of diversity in history and literature. They Were Here is a project through which she aims to expand history by bringing underrepresented voices to the forefront. In this way, she makes past, present, and future more inclusive through storytelling.

562 is her first video performance since 22-The Project. It is a list of the 562 questions she has been asked over the years as a lesbian woman — questions ranging from “Are you sure?” and “How can your parents still be proud of you?” to “You know you’re going to hell, right?” Seated on a chair, sometimes live and sometimes in a filmed version, Fleur reflects these questions back. The video and accompanying live performance premiered in October 2024 at MU-Eindhoven. 562 will be on view from September 2025 for a full year in the exhibition space of Concertgebouw Brugge.

En dat is dan ook waar Fleur over praat in haar werk: over het belang te onderzoeken welke grenzen van onszelf zijn en welke een sociale constructie. Over positief activisme en de noodzaak om vaker te kijken naar wat ons bindt, dan naar wat ons uit elkaar houdt.  

Ze werkte 7 jaar lang met haar vrouw Julian P. Boom als kunstenaarsduo en publiceerden het queer online tijdschrift Et Alors? Magazine, dat wereldwijd op 750.000 lezers per editie mocht rekenen. Hun bekendste werk was echter 22-The Project, een kunstperformance waar het koppel in alle landen zou trouwen waar het homohuwelijk was toegelaten. Julian stierf na het vierde ja-woord.  

Het boek Julian, over hun werk en het verlies van haar vrouw, verscheen in september 2019 bij Das Mag. Het boek werd ondertussen vertaald naar het Engels, Frans en het Zweeds en de film Julian (regie door Cato Kusters) is nu te zien in de cinema. 

Verder schreef ze de romans Heerlijk Monster (2022) en Beton (2024 - onderdeel van de kleuren-reeks van Uitgeverij Oevers. Fleurs’ tweedelige kinderboek Love Around the World en Love is Love, waarin Fleur de droom van hun 22-The Project vervult, werd in 2020 in de VS uitgegeven en prachtig geïllustreerd door Fatinha Ramos. Haar meest recente kinderboek heet Alle dagen Sneeuw en gaat over gendergelijkheid binnen de sport.  

Fleur heeft een erfgoed/inclusie-project dat They Were Here heet. Overal waar ze komt om een lezing te geven, schrijft ze een verhaal over een vergeten vrouwelijke schrijver/kunstenaar/... van die stad. De verhalen die ze reeds schreef zijn te vinden op Spotify. Ze leest ze voor in bibliotheken, culturele centra, scholen,.. samen met een speech over het belang van diversiteit in de geschiedenis en de literatuur. They Were Here is een project waarmee ze de geschiedenis wil uitbreiden door ondervertegenwoordigde stemmen naar de voorgrond te brengen. Op die manier maakt ze verleden, heden en toekomst inclusiever door middel van verhalen.  

562 is haar eerste video performance sinds 22-The Project. Het is een opsomming van de 562 vragen die haar als lesbische vrouw werden gesteld in de afgelopen jaren. Vragen die gaan van ‘Weet je het zeker?’ en ‘Hoe kunnen je ouders nog trots op je zijn?’ tot ‘Je weet toch dat je naar de hel gaat?’. Gezeten op een stoel, soms live soms in een gefilmde versie, kaatst Fleur deze vragen terug.  De video en bijhorende live-performance ging in oktober 2024 in premiere in het MU-Eindhoven. 562 zal vanaf September 2025 een jaar lang te zien zijn in de tentoonstellingsruimte van het Concertgebouw Brugge.
