Alexandra Bierlaire

Alexandra Bierlaire is een in Brussel geboren interdisciplinair danser en kunstenaar. Hen studeerde hedendaagse dans en choreografie aan Trinity Laban Conservatoire in Londen (first-class honours) en behaalde een master in Interdisciplinary Dance Performance aan de Northern School of Contemporary Dance, met observatiestages bij Club Guy and Roni, Ballet National de Marseille x (la) HORDE en Vertigo.

Met een achtergrond in theater, beeldende kunst, muziektheorie en harp wordt Alexandra’s bewegingspraktijk gevormd door meerdere artistieke disciplines. Ze stond op de planken in werk van Gary Clarke Company, Gecko, Trinity Maguire-Thoombs en Susan Sentler, en werkte mee aan projecten van Raphaël Germser en Dan Canham.

Naast haar performancepraktijk ontwikkelt Alexandra choreografisch werk waarin tederheid fungeert als een politieke en poëtische lens om te onderzoeken hoe we ons vandaag tot de wereld verhouden. Hen creëerde Je t’embras(s)e (2023), een onderzoek naar grenzen binnen dans- en BDSM-praktijken, en werd geselecteerd voor het Portalis Project (2022–2023), waarin Mesolithische migratie tussen Wales en Ierland centraal stond. In 2024 co-creëerde ze MACRO-PLASTIC met Gian Sanghera-Warren, een sciencefiction-geïnspireerde performance over microplastics in het lichaam.

Wij leerden Alexandra kennen tijdens onze residentietraject A Night Called Quest 2025 bij De Studio, waar hen Vellum ontwikkelde, een performance met live sound van Armand Drozy. Geïnspireerd door haar eerdere werk Tender Biopsy onderzoekt Vellum de huid als een plek van kwetsbaarheid, reflectie en nieuwe idealen. Het werk gaat in 2026 in reprise bij Bodies in Space.

Op Happy New Queer brengt ze een krachtige en poëtische danssolo die beweegt tussen kwetsbaarheid en verzet.

Alexandra Bierlaire is a Brussels-born interdisciplinary dancer and artist. They studied contemporary dance and choreography at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London (first-class honours) and completed a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Dance Performance at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, with observational placements at Club Guy and Roni, Ballet National de Marseille x (la) HORDE, and Vertigo.

With a background in theatre, fine arts, music theory and harp, Alexandra’s movement practice is shaped by multiple artistic disciplines. She has performed in works by Gary Clarke Company, Gecko, Trinity Maguire-Thoombs and Susan Sentler, and appeared in projects by Raphaël Germser and Dan Canham.

Alongside her performance career, she develops choreographic work that uses tenderness as a political and poetic lens to question how we relate to the world today. They created Je t’embras(s)e (2023), exploring boundaries in dance and BDSM practices, and were commissioned for the Portalis Project (2022–2023), investigating Mesolithic migration between Wales and Ireland. In 2024 she co-created MACRO-PLASTIC with Gian Sanghera-Warren, a science-fiction-inspired performance about microplastics in the body.

We met Alexandra during our 2025 residency trajectory A Night Called Quest at De Studio, where they developed Vellum with live sound by Armand Drozy. Inspired by her earlier work Tender Biopsy, Vellum explores the skin as a site of vulnerability, reflection and new ideals. The piece will be presented at Bodies in Space in 2026.

At Happy New Queer, she presents a powerful and poetic dance solo that moves between vulnerability and resistance.
